FoundMoney.com - It Is A Scam

This is an addendum to a post about the web sites Claim It and Missing Money I just wrote this morning; which are legitimate sites to search for unclaimed money.  They are completely free!

However, I just discovered that there is a site out there, FoundMoney.com that claims to search for you, for a fee.  Please do not fall for this.  You do not need to pay for unclaimed property searches!  Any site that claims they will do it for you for a fee, RUN, it is a scam!

Check out ConsumerAffairs.com and read the complaints or Complaints.com about FoundMoney.com.  I felt I needed to let you know about this site since writing about ClaimIt.ca.gov this morning.

If you go to Claimit.ca.gov or missingmoney.com and find you have missing money, let us know.  We hope to hear from you!

I thought I would pop my two cents in here regarding this matter, and do agree the site you mentioned stinks. They don't even have all claims anyway. It's my understanding they buy lists from the government and place them into their own database. Obviously, if they are buying lists, they dont have all of the list.

On the other hand, there is a site I highly recommend run by a guy named Russ. While he has all the direct links to the state offices to search like to free links you mentioned, he also covers hard to find claims which the government has not received like "pre-escheat" claims. Russ says if someone tries to charge you more than 10-15% as a claims finder, it is most likely a claim the government isn't even aware of. This is how I found my money and saved 35% the finder was trying to charge me.

Another thing is there are so many sites like the one you mentioned it's hard to know who to trust anymore. Russ's site at http://www.unclaimedmoney.net allows me to rest easy knowing he keeps all of that updated for me. Plus it's nice knowing I can contact someone via phone if I ever have questions. As far as I am concerned, it was worth the one time fee to have the peace of mind.

In short, and in my opinion, yes, stay away from sites like the one you mentioned and others like cashunclaimed.com, but don't be afraid to reach out for help if you have difficulty finding a claim you know exists, but just can't find in the free online databases.

I hope this helps anyone who is in a similar situation I was in only a few months ago.

Rich, Thanks for your response!

I will still recommend for people to search free sites for unclaimed money first.

I am sure there could be situations where you may need someone's assistance in searching for money, I just ask people to be cautious in who you choose to do this.

I did some quick research on the site you recommend and could not find anything negative about it. I do not however, endorse your site but leave it up to others to decide.

Thanks,
Donna
