Today Show And USA Today Weekend Poll

Saturday, 26 July 2008
Pin It

On the Today Show Friday morning Kathy Lee and Hoda asked the Today/USA weekend question, "Would you rather your kids have:  Good friends, Good manners or Good grades?"

I know without a doubt I would rather my son to have good manners!  I happen to agree with Kathy Lee.  I think if he has good manners he will have good friends.   And as far as good grades go...they are no where as important as the other two.

I know people who did great in school (4.00 GPA) and were truly not all that smart.  On the other hand, I've known people with a C average that were highly intelligent.  A good grade is no indication of smarts!

Besides good manners (and subsequently, good friends) will last you a lifetime, as well as, get your further in life.

You can go to msnbc.com and take the poll.  If you would like to share with us your answer, we would love to hear from you!

I would like my kid to just be happy and if I had my preference I would like them to be talented more than I would like them to be smart and get good grades. If they are involved in an activity they are passionate about I think it will keep them out of trouble as a teenager.

I agree the most important thing is their happiness, well actually good health would be the most important. As long as they are happy and healthy what more could we ask for?!

I would have to say that good friends seem to be the most important to me - I would assume if you have good friends than chances are your manners are decent. But I don't know if the opposite is necessarily true - just because someone always says please and thank you, doesn't mean he/she has friends. And I guess if my child wasn't as perfect on the pleases/thank-yous as she should be, but she is happy and well-adjusted and has friends, than that works for me. But its hard question - because we would like our child to have all 3!

You may be right. If you have good friends you probably have good manners. I personally think that good manners means more than 'please and thank you'. I think they mean that plus having tact and being respectful, etc. So I'm still going with good manners. Smile
